organic, filmic or black & white?

When I was lucky enough to have Mark in the studio for his updated personal branding shots (if you grow facial hair, you have to make sure your shot still looks like you!), I knew that I wanted to create something a little different from what we had done before.

I captured the standard poses and compositions that would give him clean, friendly and professional imagery but then I thought it would be fun to produce something a little more edgy and 'dirty' the frame up with some equipment.

As soon as this picture was on my computer I just knew that I had to edit it and Mark did too! So I created three versions for him to use or just put on the wall.

I've kept them classic tones to his natural colouring for the original one. However, I wanted to be quite filmic so I thought using the teal & orange colour palette you see in so many movies would really work for this image and I love that too. Last, but by no means least, a really felt this image would work with a real grungy black & white finish with high contract to make him pop out of the image.

I'll be honest, I love them all and keep changing my mind on my favourite when I look at them all together!

What's your favourite? Would you want something like this to finish off your personal branding session?

If you want to see more please head over to our portfolio. If you want to know have a chat with me at any time, drop me a message and say hi!

turning forty

Well, it happened. On Saturday I reached the grand age of 40. And do you know what?! I love it!

I know that sounds strange to some but I have spent so much time in the past two years with people in their 40s and beyond and they are incredible! All of them. They come from all different walks of life, have learnt things about themselves along the way and are embracing everything to the full.

Gone are the days of worrying about other people. You really have no control over others thoughts and feelings. YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT. You have no control. We know this because when something happens (for example a nice topical one for this weekend, Person X wins Strictly!) we all have different reactions to the same piece of news.

I think it's only when you get to this kind of mile stone that you truly realise it's time to realise that all the worry just isn't worth it.

Out of all the wonderful women I have photographed this year, the one real unifying piece of advice they would give their 20 year old selves has been to stop worrying so much and to just get on with things and do it. Now is the time to embrace life and all it's idiosyncrasies - that's what makes it worth living

I didn't have a huge party for my 40th (who does this close the Xmas?!) but I did use it as an excuse to catch up with my best friend over a spa day, spend time with my mummy friends painting pottery with a glass (or two) of Prosecco, heading out for a Xmas meal with my networking friends and then a wonderful meal and trip to see the seals with my Dad, Husband and Daughters.

My cup is well and truly full!

And there will be a party, BUT it will be with the other wonder 40 women who have been sharing this journey with me for my 40 Over 40 Project when I get to exhibit their images! There will def be a Prosecco or two there as well!

When I was painting pottery this week I wanted to put a quote on my jug I chose to sum up how I go into my next 40 and it had to be this one from Jane Austen, whom I share my birthdate with.

"Know your own happiness,

Want for nothing but patience

- Or give it a more fascinating name:

Call it hope."

40 over 40: meet asma

Well, what can I say about this absolutely delicious human being?! Asma is such a joy to be around, she has a really calming and wonderful presence and heart of gold. I could spend hours talking to her (and I did!) and never get bored.

Asma's upbringing has been very different and we wanted to capture some of that in her images plus her duel Indian and African heritage. She loves strong colours and landscapes so finishing of her session with a trip to the beach for 5am sunrise was an absolute must!

I have just sent her images off to print and I can't wait for them to return and see them physically in front of me. It's going to be hard to choose which one to put into the exhibition as I love them all!!

As I photograph more and more of my 40 Over 40 ladies I can't wait to start creating the magazine that goes along with this project containing their interviews so you all get to learn a little bit more about them. They are strong, soft, wise, amazing individuals and it's an honour to tell their stories.

Thanks for letting me photograph you Asma and tell you story.

I still have some spaces available so if you are interested in joining, then head over to our landing page and find out more. £10 for every session goes to support the wonderful work of Priscilla Bacon Hospice.

what does your headshot say about your company?

This week I delivered headshots to the brilliant Smash Marketing Limited team and, I'm very pleased to say, that they are super happy with them!

It's so important to make sure your headshots are professional, suitable to your industry but equally make you friendly & approachable to your target market.

One of the worst things you can o in business is have a sub par headshot. It subconsciously says a lot about you and your brand. You might not realise it, but if it's out of focus, messy in the background, you are pulling an uncomfortable expression or you're posed in a way that makes your either too formal or too relaxed, your potential client will make up their minds about your brand views and values before even making contact with you.

Now Smash Marketing can go forwards looking tip top and use their shots on their website, email signatures, business cards, editorial pieces and much, much, more and be on brand and looking wonderful!

On a separate note, the are the actual BOMB at what they do in the world of SEO. Beks often takes workshops to train others about how to work in SEO and, what's more, they have a money back guarantee that if they don't improve things with you within 6 months they will give you your money back - no one else is doing that! That's how brilliant they are.

It was lovely to meet everyone at Smash and I can't wait to see these shots appear!

If you need your headshots taken or personal branding analysed then please don't hesitate to drop us a message. We work with you to achieve imagery that works for you and can travel to your space to do it.

40 over 40: meet Emma

It was so lovely to see Emma yesterday and catch up. She's such an incredible lady and I had so much fun working on her images. She absolutely smashed her session right out of the park!

Emma is a school teacher so there was no doubt that we had to sit her on a school desk for her dirty frame images. It was the perfect setting and she looked so at ease for it with such a natural style.

Her other images included her love for Joe Whiley's styling, her love for shoes & hats as well as wrapping her in tulle to make some couture gown shots which remind me of Marilyn Monroe!

This is what life Over 40 looks like - how inspirational! I'm now busy trying to decide which one of these gorgeous images goes into the 40 Over 40 Project exhibition.

I still have some spaces available so if you are interested in joining, then head over to https://www.atelier-creative.co.uk/40-over-40 and find out more. £10 for every session goes to support the wonderful work of Priscilla Bacon Hospice.

Thankyou so much Emma for trusting me with your images - your boys are going to grow up going 'look at my Mum!' and rightly so! Every time you walk past them I hope they bring a massive smile to your face and that you love them as much as I do.

a review from natasha

I've been a little bit quiet on here. Not because I haven't been working with some fantastic people, because I really have, but because it's all been secret squirrel stuff that can't be put on here.. just yet.

With that in mind, it was so lovely to receive this amazing testimonial from Natasha yesterday! She's such an incredible woman, and fabulous Mummy of three and also, without a shadow of a doubt, a wonderful friend so I'm thrilled that she's taking part on the 40/40 Project!

Needless to say she was a little bit anxious before we planned her session and even on the morning of her shoot but she absolutely nailed it! We had so much fun start to finish that we forgot about the time and overran... slightly!

The photos are so beautiful and seeing herself in them has allowed her to reflect. Since her session she has made some life changing decisions and I have seen her go from strength to strength with her own self-value. It's such a privilege to even be a tiny part of this journey for her because she's seriously rocking life currently - I cannot keep up with her most of the time!!

Thank you for your kind words and for letting me photograph you Natasha. xxx

If you have any questions or want to say hi please drop me a message!

headshots two ways

Meet Jenn, We Are Doodlebugs newest team member. She's so lovely and a great addition to this lovely team of people who really know their stuff. It was so great to get her in the studio to make sure she had headshots that matched with the rest of her team.

I always take corporate headshots on two backgrounds or with two different set ups. Why you might ask? Well, one headshot is not enough and anyone who tells you that really hasn't thought that hard about it!

If you think about it, we need professional pictures of us for lots of different locations and not every places targets the same market/demographic/style. For example, the sort of people you attract on LinkedIn are going to be different to Facebook, to instagram, to an editorial in a publication, to an email signature. You really do need imagery for all types of occasions.

You need some that are friendly and approachable and maybe a little more relaxed, some for a more formal look and maybe more serious. Also, have you thought about different settings? Some pages on a website are dark coloured so you need a lighter image for it to stand out and visa versa. If you put a lighter image on a light page, it'll be lost so a darker, more contrasting one usually works on lighter pages.

With We are Doodlebug they stick to a classic white but then also a dark blue backdrop that's been colour matched to their brand colours. Sleek, smart and professional yet approachable and friendly setting the right tone for their business.

If this is your one chance to impress somebody and 'stop the scroll' it's surely so important to get right.

Not only that, statistics show that changing your headshot regularly gains you more traction and gets you seen more on place like LinkedIn - who doesn't want extra exposure?

Thanks once again Jon and his team for trusting me with your headshots. It's always a pleasure and I'm so pleased that I can help you with your overall brand and business because you truly are fantastic at what you do!

Have you thought about how your headshots are looking lately?

As always, drop me a message to say hi or ask me anything! Plus follow #ateliercreative for more photography hints and tips.

Rupert

horse equine portrait beach Norwich Norfolk portrait photographer

It's been a quiet year for equine photography. I have been so busy with my 40/40 Project ladies (who are amazing and I'm loving every minute of it!) that I haven't had a chance to photograph many horses & ponies this year so getting the chance to photograph Rupert was an absolute dream.

He's such a glorious fella with gorgeous long mane, cute white blaze across his nose and sassy personality to go with it. We took him to the beach where he spent time galloping up and down the shoreline with his owner Amber and I got some great images. However, I love this still image of him looking out to sea. There were two grey seals playing in the waves that I think he had his eye on.

Norfolk has some gorgeous beaches so being able to take Amber and Rupert to one really was so much fun!

Where would you have your horse or pony photographed?

aurora

Well what an absolute privilege it was to shoot for this wonderful family. Aurora's mum contacted me from Washington, USA wanting Senior Portrait images of her daughter for her school yearbook. She wanted images at a castle because they don't have them in the States so we met at Leeds Castle, Kent.

After months of planning styling, hair & make-up, locations at the castle, photography permissions at the castle, we got to meet in July and it was such a magical day to remember! The weather may have not alway been on our side but we had glorious soft light to shoot in and used various locations across the grounds to get a variety of imagery and... I love them all!

Aurora had her hair and make-up styled locally and chose to wear this beautiful white dress, which made her look like a fair maiden dancing through the grounds of Leeds Castle. She also loves wildlife so it was great to get to introduce her to swans, explain the English significance of them and even capture a few shots with them in.

I could have shared so many images with you but here are just a few from our time together that I love. They feel so romantic and whimsical and such a beautiful keepsake of such a precious time in her life before she heads off to University.

I cannot wait to see them in print and in her yearbook. I feel like these images would look amazing in an editorial for a magazine and I know I want to have one produced for the studio wall as it was such a beautiful time for me too.

Thank you to Janelle & Aurora for such a wonderful day and trusting me with your forever memories. I loved every second of it.

jockey & Jill

Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Jockey & Jill for some marketing content for their up and coming products. I love horses so to get to do this with Amber (who is so nice and extremely knowledgable) was fantastic. She has such a great brand and really understands riders and their needs, without it breaking the bank!

After we finished, we headed down to the beach to get some riding shots so I could capture her with Rupert. The weather was glorious, the sea was calm and Rupert put on a fantastic show, so much so even the seals came to have a watch!

I can't wait to produce all their beautiful new pictures for them, but in the meantime I wanted to make sure that Amber had a little image as a 'sneak peak'.

I can't believe sometimes that I am lucky enough to call this my job.

wall art for the win

Last week I got to deliver some gorgeous wall art to one of my clients and it looks positively beautiful! It's bespoke to their tastes and of museum quality so that they art will outlive them, their children and much longer than that.

What a beautiful gift to hand down to future generations!

It got me thinking about why I use the print house I do. They are high-end, produce the absolute best quality and all their products are made with love and attention to last a lifetime.

Let's be honest, it would most definitely be far easier for me (and more profitable) to offer my clients a lower-end print house. However, terrible it is for my business model, I will just not scrimp on quality when it comes to my clients and the production of their art.

I'm not interested in the cheapest. I'm interested in the best for my clients.

Why on earth would you commission a portrait photographer to produce timeless work for you if is then printed using sub-par quality, won't last and is not sustainable for the environment?

All my wall art is hand-produced using solid wooden frames, which are made of wood the is FSC certified.

What is absolutely fanatic is that the print house plants three trees for every piece of wall art they produce! If that's not important in today's climate crisis, I don't know what is.

Now, when it comes to the printing of the work, I always make sure that all images are on upgraded paper to suit the individual needs of the imagery. No standard lustre paper (that you get at Boots or Snappy Snaps) is used by me but fine art papers, which shows off all pieces in the finest way possible.

Now, it is also important to note that most wall art comes as standard with acrylic in the front of it for protection, which to me is not the best way to view your imagery. As standard, all artwork has museum art glass, which remove annoying reflections so you can see your art and also protects it from UV light, so your art stays as perfect as it is the day it's hung.

If glass is not your thing, I also offer an option which means the print house gives your image seven hand coats of giclee varnish to seal and protect it forever more.

So why does it matter?

Well, why on earth would you spend hard earned cash on beautiful portraits to not have them look how they should do with professional printing and product?

Half of the job is the production of the prints but until you see them in person, finished with precision and printed so the colours are viewed how they should be seen with expert colour profiles and ink on the best paper, you've not done the images justice.

It is like designing your dream dress and then making it out of cotton instead of the desired silk it was designed to be produced in.

So, for me, wall art is absolutely an investment but something that every day I look at brings a smile to my face. I just wish I had beautiful pieces of some of my loved ones who are no longer with us. That would have been the ultimate gift passed down to me looking perfect from the day it was produced.

Do you have wall art in your home?

If you want to learn more about what goes into a Portrait Session with us, please head over to hear or drop us and email.

be more like Pamela

This week Pamela Anderson has been documented in the press for wearing no make-up at Paris Fashion Week with stars such as Jamie Lee Curtis praising her and saying that she has started a 'no make-up revolution'.

She told Elle last year that started going makeup-free after her makeup artist Alexis Vogel sadly died from breast cancer. Anderson said: "She was the best. And since then, I just felt, without Alexis, it's just better for me not to wear makeup."

I wish more people embraced life and became more like Pamela. As women, there's this expectation to wear make-up, cover our skin imperfections and give this 'perfect' appearance is huge and if you don't wear it you're seen as 'lazy'. It makes me feel a bit queasy actually.

Since my girls arrived five years ago, make-up has become one of those things on the list of priorities that I have. For me, it went from something I did religiously and felt I had to do, to now it's something I do when I have time and want to do it. it's not a chore anymore, it's a choice, a luxury just for me - not others.

Yes, unfortunately it's still seen negatively by people for wearing it (just like there's still a stigma towards those raised as male wearing it), but there are so many positives for making my own choices on this. For a start, my Husband knows what I look like without it and I'm not scared to come to bed at night and look like the 'real me'. Secondly, after a long day at the computer I'm not worried about rubbing my eye and smearing mascara everywhere! Thirdly, my girls see me as me and don't feel this pressure to conform. They can choose to wear make-up or not wear it when the time comes, BUT it is most definitely their choice.

When I get a Client who wants to embrace their naked beauty it's powerful in its own special way. They want to be seen just as they are in real life and that's special to them, just like others want to be made up and taken away to a place they have always wanted to embrace.

So, be more like Pamela. Whether it's make-up or something else, do it because you want to, not because you feel like you have to conform for others. It should be about expressing you.

If you want to learn more about what goes into a Portrait Session with us, please head over to hear or drop us and email.

40 OVER 40: meet fran

Fran saw another one of my 40 Over 40 Ladies on my LinkedIn page and got in touch because she wanted to get involved and it's been an utter pleasure to work with her!

We have had lots of long chats about how the media portrays women 40+ and what it does to our mental health. It's such a big topic and so important it's addressed.

Well, gone are the days that being over 40 includes a pleated skirt. This is what a women over 40 looks like. She's incredible with such a beautiful aura and such a joy to be around. She's also managed to keep this whole experience quiet from everyone... well the secret is now out!

Fran was worried that we would only have a couple of good images of her, well boy was she wrong! I could have shared so many more with you but here's just a few from her session, including sunset at Hunstanton, which was so much fun! Even the deep sea fisherman on the beach were enjoying our session!

Thanks so much Fran for letting me photograph you and I'm sorry for making you cry when you saw your images! Hopefully happy tears :) Another glorious woman to add to the exhibition!

Thanks to the glorious Tasha May Makeup Artist for all her hair & make-up artistry. She really knows her stuff. :)

you are enough

Women are constantly bombarded with messages on a daily basis about how we should look. From the media to social media, we are constantly being told that we need to be thin, toned, and perfect. This can have a devastating impact on our self-esteem and body image and, quite frankly, is a load of BS!

We need to reject these negative messages and learn to love and accept our bodies for who they are. Bodies are bodies. They come in all shapes and sizes. They do incredible things. They let you travel the world, dance like nobodies watching and, for some of us, give life. How incredible is that?!

We need to celebrate our curves and everything in between. Our bodies are not defined by our weight or appearance, but by our strength, our power, and our resilience.

When you have a negative thought about your body, I want you to consider just a few things:

NEGATIVE SELF TALK

When you catch yourself thinking negative thoughts about your body, challenge them. Ask yourself where these thoughts are coming from and why you believe them. Once you start to challenge these thoughts, you will start to see your body in a more positive light.

SELF-CARE

Do things that make you feel good about yourself, both physically and mentally. This could include eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, or spending time with loved ones.

DRESS FOR YOURSELF

Don't wear clothes that you think you should wear or that you think will make you look a certain way. Wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable.

FIND YOUR TRIBE

Surround yourself with people who love and support you, regardless of your body size or shape. These people will help you to build a positive body image and to feel good about yourself.

It's not about becoming a 'perfect body' but a perfect you. Accept yourself for who you are and love your body for all that it is. Find strength and power in your curves.

I wanted to share with you a picture of sixty brilliant and beautiful women of all body types, in their undies embracing their bodies in a fountain in Italy! If you look carefully, you may even spot me.

Don't wait until it's too late. Your family and friends love you for who you are right now. You are enough. Head over to here to see women who have experienced what it means to be enough.

40 OVER 40: meet Pippa

It was such a pleasure to get to photograph Pippa for the 40 Over 40 Project and, to be honest with you, I never thought I would! She was incredibly nervous to take part and it took a while toward out what she wanted to achieve in her images but once she came in for her session we were all beaming ear to ear and laughing the whole time!

We had so much fun creating some Hollywood movie imagery of eras for bygone days with feathers, sparkles and a beautiful 50s dress and petticoat.

I love the images she picked and her beautiful smiling face just sums up the fun we had on the day.

Which look would you pick for your session?

Thanks to the glorious Tasha May Makeup Artist for all her hair & make-up artistry and thanks to Pippa for letting me photograph you and show how radiant and empowering life after 40 really is! I can't wait to add one of your portraits to the final exhibition and magazine!

boudoir for the subject

I struggle with the word boudoir because it conjures up scantily clad women or page 3 of the Sun for most. It's seen as being created for the viewer and not the subject sitting for the photos.

Well, I just think that is the most ridiculous thing! I think you should feel empowered from your boudoir session. It should represent you and how you feel on an intimate level, not the person viewing it. It needs to speak about where you are in your life and have your personality shine through. Whether that is close ups in full underwear or full body shots wearing a shirt. It should be how you feel you're most confident and sexy, which may even be in your favourite PJs!

There are so many types of boudoir you could chose from, beautiful silhouettes, grecian sculptures, bridal boudoir and many more. That's not just one type and style so it's important to have a consultation and plan your session of 5 different looks to reflect you and the intimacy you want to portray.

It can be coy, empowering, playful, naughty, strong, soulful and all of the above! Overall it should capture your intimacy and how you want to be seen.

If you were considering boudoir or haven't ever considered it I'm always up for a chat. I love to speaking to people from all different walks of life - we are all so different and that's what's wonderful. No two days are the same in my world.

What style of boudoir would you choose?

As always, drop me a message to say hi or ask me anything! Plus follow #ateliercreative for more photography hints and tips.

I was lucky enough in the gorgeous Sumer sunshine to take the Andrews Family out for a portrait session overlooking Norwich. It was so much fun and we had a fantastic time walking, playing games and generally causing mayhem as the sun set!

I loved the fact that they brought little Marley along with them. He's such a fantastic pup with amazing recall so he was zooming around between them all having a wonderful time as well!

As soon as I saw their family dynamic, I knew that I just had to get a family portrait with him as the main focus because our pets really are our world and deserve to be included as part of the family in a family session.

I love this shot I captured of him! He's playing fetch whilst the family watch on and you can even seen the Norwich Cathedral spire in the background.

Over the weekend I got to deliver their beautiful products to them which included this image as a piece of wall art. Within only a few hours I received a message back with this picture of their gorgeous wall art already on the wall and it really makes the corner of their room! Marley is pride of place and it looks fantastic.

It's such a privilege to get spend time with such an incredible family and create memories with them and the icing on the cake was having Marley with us!

Next time you have photos taken, maybe consider taking your Puppa along with you to the session. After all, they are a massive part of the family too.

As always, drop me a message to say hi or ask me anything! Plus follow #ateliercreative for more photography hints and tips.

your legacy is important

I don't normally post images before they have been edited, but I thought this was so important that I couldn't not share it and it's sentiment.

This week I was lucky enough to photograph my mother-in-law Sue for the 40/40 Project. I didn't ask her to join, she asked me and I was bowled over to think that she had that much faith in me to let me photographer her. It really is touching when someone puts their trust in you to take their portrait and I'm always honoured.

We shot four of her looks in the studio, but decided to head to the beach for her fifth because it really means so much to her and we had a glorious time. She will be 70 next year, but that didn't stop her running along the sand, skipping through the waves and even laying down so I could capture some beautiful images of her.

I love this image. It truly sums her up perfectly and so I had to give her a sneak peak of it before it had an edit. She thought it was lovely but the true impact came when I showed my Husband and Sister in Law, her children. They both love it.

Sometimes the image is not just about creating it for you, but also your children. I would love to have portraits of my family, my legacy, to be able to share with my girls and they share with any family they choose to have. To have imagery that sums up those closest to us is one of the most precious things people own and I'm so privilege that I get to create them.

Being a photographer really is an honour. Thank you for letting me photograph you Sue. x
