This week I am giving a five minute presentation at BNI City Chapter and I realised that I don't have an up-to-date headshot for them, so I spent some time yesterday rectifying that.

So many people don't update their headshots and it's a complete missed opportunity. If you've been in business 10 years, gaining tons of experience and skills yet your headshot was taken when you first started there is a disconnect in the message you are sending out to everyone. You need it to reflect your current age and ability to be credible. You do not want your old headshot to contribute directly or indirectly to lost business opportunities.

It is also worth noting that camera technology has moved on a lot. Now we even have mirrorless camera technology and camera sensors that take between 50-100mb images. The quality of imagery is outstanding these days and if you headshot is years old, the quality will be lower than even model day smartphones. It will suggest two things to potential clients. Firstly, they will question whether your business lack resources to update and improve your brand or that you are lazy and have no forethought to consider how important an up to date headshot is to your brand.

Lastly, but by no means least, every time you put a picture of yourself on the internet, it will show up when someone searches for you. It is this alone that will allow you to build brand presence and an updated headshot allows you to continue to grow that bran, increasing the positive effect of Google searches. It's so important to show up as your brand for people to put a face to a name, to identify you and people like to do business with people after all.

Take three simples steps to keep your headshot up-to-date:

- Create a schedule of updating your headshot, put it in your diary and stick to it.

- When the time comes around to update your picture, research the current trends to keep your headshot professional, modern and on brand.

- Change out your current shot. This is low risk, but high reward, especially if you are an entrepreneur.
