what is a folio box?

Sometimes photographers speak in a foreign language and get so excited with what they are explaining and showing that they forget that others may not be completely following along with what they are saying...!

A folio box is a loose leaf album of fine art matted prints. Every photograph in there is in it's own individual mat, which can come in white or black, depending what what you think will be showcase your image.

But what makes a piece of paper fine art?! Well, when you head to get images printed, you get them as standard on 'lustre' paper. That's what most shops on the hughstreet do and it's got a slight sheen to it and dimply texture. I can tell you now, this paper is not the best for your images! A lot of them give a green hue to them and the light catches them in a way you can't see the full effect of the artwork. Why do these shops use it then? It's cheap to supply and durable. Most people have never seen anything else and know no difference.

The fine art paper used in these folio boxes is even more special than regular final art paper - how is this possible?! Well, fine art paper is extremely delicate and even has to be handled in cotton gloves!! It's a faff to be honest and I hate seeing people upset when their photos get easily damaged! So, I did a lot of research and found this fine art paper - Canon HD Deep Velvet Mat Touch Paper. It's amazing! It has a slight laminated over the top so it makes the paper really durable and yet giving you all the benefits of regular fine art paper!! What's also amazing is that this company print in a colour space that has twice as many colours as the rest of the print house around the world so your images look far more vivid!!

The albums themselves are completely to die for. They are handmade in Italian leather or, even, vegan leather (yes that's a thing!) and you would never even know the difference. They are so weighty and beautiful and come with either a clear window like a frame, or with a box lid so you can hide your prints away for your eyes only.

The reason I love folio boxes so much is that you can add to them at a later date. I like to get my clients the boxes that hold 30 images as they may get 10 images from a portrait session but then come back for another session the following year and add more images to it. Plus, they stand on your shelf like a book or a picture frame for display.

Do you love these as much as I do? Does this all make a bit more sense now?!

As always, please message me with any questions or just to say hi! I'm always here to help!
