A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk about my work at Atelier Creative and spent a fair bit of that talk going through my editing process. It's always worth explaining this to people as more think you just press a button and that's your image. There is so much more to it than that, but talking through the editing process is always fun as showing a before and after gets people’s minds ticking on what goes into a good retouch.

Photographers use a term for photographers who just 'point and click' and burn to a disc for an obscenely low fee - think £75 for 100 images. They have not considered posing and styling their subject, lighting to suit and flatter the subject, evoking the correct mood, working in the environment, the composition of the image to give the biggest impact and also the backdrop/props to suit the session. Also, if you're lucky, you may get a basic edit from them, if anything. Not a bespoke edit to suit the situation. They are referred to as 'shoot & burn' photographers.

Below, I've attached a before & after image of a custom signature portrait session I had with this fabulous lady and dear friend. This should give you just a little insight into what goes into producing an award-winning image. Its takes between 20 minutes to 1 hour to edit each image from your session so a lot of love goes into getting your artwork ready for your Reveal Session and perfect for print for your wall.

Did you realise that a good and professional retouch takes that much time? How would you want your images edited?
