location visits

Portrait of a young girl on location at a sunflower field at White House Farm, Sprowston. Taken by Norwich Portrait Photographer Claire Howes, Atelier Creative.

This weekend I spent some time location scouting for up-and-coming portrait sessions. We have had a new sunflower patch open near us with shorter sunflowers than you normally see, so we all jumped in the car to have a look and find out what it's about.

I always like to do this to assess lots of factors - whether there are toilets nearby, is it wheelchair/pram accessible, what's the shade cover like for lighting the images and also for a bit of recuperation out of the heat, is their mobile signal for emergencies, what's the terrain like for footwear/paws, how busy is it, where does the sun rise and set from. There's lots to think about that not everyone does but all vitality important for a successful and safe portrait session.

The bonus with this sunflower patch is that you could take some home with you so I now have three beautifully huge sunflowers in my kitchen! Though worth remembering to take clients here when it opens and not towards the end of the season!

This is just one simple snap I took of Lydia. I cut her fringe as soon as we got home!!

Would you prefer a portrait session on location rather than in the studio?

As always, please message me with any questions or just to say hi! I'm always here to help!
