high-key black & white

I love a dark and moody image, beautiful Rembrandt lighting, lots of intense emotion and styling. However, sometimes the simplicity of a light and bright image is breathtaking and beautiful on the wall.

High-key means that these images are lighter, brighter and focused more on the highlights than the shadows.

I had an amazing opportunity to photograph Cat for a Signature Portrait session whilst she was pregnant with little Otis and I absolutely love these high key images of her! They really capture how she was glowing during her pregnancy and highlight her beautifully.

In fact, we started with this high key set up and in these shots she is lit from behind through a scrim (large white screen) and then the light is bounced around using reflectors made of polystyrene. Did you know that polystyrene is the best for this because the structure of all the beads compressed together gives a bumpy, larger surface area so you can bounce around more light.

After we had taken these shots (some of them with her using her husbands shirt!) we then moved on to some moodier shots so there is a great selection in her gallery that I am currently retouching - I can't wait to show her them all! Head over to our Signature Gallery page to get a little sneak peak and see other options.

Do you prefer a dark and moodier image? Or are you more high-key in the images that you like? Or do you like both?

As always, please message me with any questions or just to say hi! I'm always here to help!
