but what if…?

Portrait of a woman in black & white taken in studio by Norwich Portrait Photographer Claire Howes, Atelier Creative.

I spend a lot of time on the phone with clients answering questions and concerns they have about their portraits session with me. I'm happy to do this and it gives me a chance to really get to know them, but it has made me realise that if they are thinking it, maybe others are too... So I'm going to try and tackle some of these in my 'BUT WHAT IF...?' posts and set your minds at rest.

I’m not a model and I really don't know how to move/use my body. How should I prepare myself for my session? Is there something I should read on how to pose my body?

Absolutely not! One of the things that sets me apart from a lot of photographers is that I train and specialise in posing my subjects. In fact, people come to me to photograph them especially because I have studied posing and continue to study with one of the best 'posers' in the business - Sue Bryce. I was lucky enough to work with her personally in Italy this June. It was an amazing experience and done nothing but to level up my skill set further.

When you come in for your session with me, regardless of the genre you choose to be photographed in, I will continually direct and pose you through the whole session. I am your 'eyes' and will make sure that we will get the 'shot' you dreamed of having. In fact, most of my clients come out saying that they feel like they have had a workout after a session with me as occasionally sometimes the post may feel awkward to you but looks perfect on camera and they are so pleased that we have achieved it!

I can also pose for anyone, so please don't worry if you're not super flexible or even struggle with mobility issues. I have got you covered and can adapt all posing and direction to suit your ability.

If you wan't to read something prior to your session, I wouldn’t suggest a posing book BUT I would suggest Teri Hofford’s book ‘The Geode Theory’ for all things to do with how we as a society see our bodies. It really is an incredible read.

Is there anything that you would like to know the answer to? Please comment below and I will make sure to answer it!

As always, please message me with any questions or just to say hi! I'm always here to help!
